WeBWorK was developed at the University of Rochester and is being used extensively at Rutgers University in this course. Students in Math 135 are required to complete assignments in WeBWorK. Consult the generic syllabus, the course overview, or your instructor's guidelines for more about the role of WeBWorK in Math 135.
In addition to these pages, most pages of WeBWorK also contain directions. Therefore, if you are ever unsure of what you should do, try reading the directions and descriptions on the page at which you are looking.
If you are having trouble and cannot resolve the issue on your own, please contact your TA or the WeBWorK administrator. WeBWorK pages contain a link that allows you to email your TA and the WeBWorK administrator, and using this "button" to email them will also provide them with data regarding the trouble you are having with a particular WeBWorK page.
To get started open your browser and go to WeBWorK.
To log in to your WeBWorK account you need to know your username and your password. Your username is your RUID student number (no dashes) and your initial password is also your RUID student number (no dashes). After logging in for the first time, you should click on the password link on the left of the window to change your password.
If you have difficulty logging in, and you have consulted this guide to no avail, please contact your TA or the Webwork Coordinator with a clear description of the problem. Please include your section number, name, and student ID in your e-mail.
After logging in you will see a list of homework sets. Beside each set is information about the set. The open date is when the problems will be available to work on, the due date is when you can no longer submit answers for credit, and the answer date is the time at which the answers will be available.
To view the problem set "Set 0", for example, click on the "Set 0" link. Then click on the problem number you wish to do.
If you have trouble viewing the problem you may change the format by choosing to view equations as "formatted" instead of the default "images" on the lower left of the browser window. One caveat is that you need to set the encoding properly (e.g. Western(MacRoman) for Mac Netscape) for best results. Other options are also available but they may be harder to read. If you encouter problems viewing WeBWorK sets, contact your TA or the Webwork Coordinator
Navigate to each problem you wish to solve. Enter your answers and click on the 'Submit Answer' button. For more complicated answers you might want to preview your answer before submitting it. This shows what the computer thinks you have entered (which is not necessarily the correct answer).

Once you have submitted an answer, you will be told whether your answer is correct or not. If not, you can try again. Note that once you have submitted an answer it is saved.
After you've tried a problem, you can either go to the next problem, the previous problem, or see the list of the problems again by clicking on the appropriate buttons at the top of the page. The final score for a set is the number of problems you have correct by the deadline.
Tip: It is best not to wait until the last possible moment to submit your answers. Do them when you can and take advantage of the instantaneous feedback webwork offers. You may also find that it is too late to receive help if any technical issues arise.
Note that if you plan on doing the work while at the computer then you do not need to have a hardcopy of the relevant set. But if needed you can get a pdf file containing the problems from which you can print.
To get a hardcopy, click on the "Download Hardcopy of Selected Set" button on page where the set is chosen, choose the set you wish to have a hardcopy of and click on the "Generate Hardcopy" button. Alternatively, on the problem list page of a set you can click on the "Download a hardcopy of this problem set" link.
Note that either proceedure gives you a pdf files and you will need software to read/print this.
On the page listing the problems for a particular set there is a 'status' column indicating the score on each problem. You may need to reload the page to see your current status.
To see your grades simply click on the grades button on the left side of the browser window. The headings are Set, Score, Out Of, Ind, and Problems.
Note: You do NOT have to send feedback in order to submit your problem set. Your problems are submitted as you go. Please check the status column on the problem list page, or the score column on the grades page in order to verify your score.
When you are finished, log out using the "Logout" link on the left side of the page. You will also be automatically logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity.
